Mark and I worked together for over two years on a global programme of transformation of a number of technologies and a creation of services around directory and identity for SABMiller. Mark was the lead on the work stream covering global monitoring, automation, service tooling and reporting. Mark’s technical skills put him squarely at the top in his domain. He has been an invaluable asset from design and implementation, across service integration and knowledge transfer of all things System Center. In our programme, we worked with all Microsoft Services arms, our internal infrastructure teams and to the executive level of IS management. Mark left an impression with every audience. Glowing praises for technical prowess aside, my personal belief is that Mark’s greatest contribution to any environment is his tenacity, Rottweiler-like approach to continually looking for ways to achieve the demand in front of him, and when those are met – to add value through his own creations. In an age where the description “Subject Matter Expert” and “Consultant” are used far more widely than the people they’re directed at deserve, Mark Stone stands out as a shining example in the crowd. And what a welcome breath of fresh air and enthusiasm he is. In the last 15 years that I’ve been delivering Systems Management solutions across many hundreds of projects, thousands of servers and at multiple customers, I have come across at most 5 people who are exemplars for their skills. This is not just because of their knowledge (which is excellent), nor just their ability to quickly understand their customers’ needs, nor the skill to put technical speak into language that means something to The Business. No, it’s the sheer ability to deliver exactly what they say (and the bar is set far higher than their peers), always on time and always on budget, that puts them in the highest category. Needless to say, Mark falls into this group. In my opinion, Mark is one of the best consultants in the business and I am genuinely privileged to have had the pleasure to work with him. The only downside will be when I compare others’ work to his own… It would be unlikely it will even come close.

I engaged Mark to come to confused.com as an alternative to sending three members of the IT Ops team on separate, external SCOM courses. The acceptance criteria set prior to the engagement was fully met via Mark’s direct and positive approach. Mark’s training style could be described as unconventional yet the team found it very effective; as well as being technically adept, Mark is a practitioner of NLP , this allows Mark to instil concepts and themes in a way that engaged each of the team’s individual learning styles and aspirations. Through a mixture of a mnemonics, hands-on workshops, and various tips from the field, the team were brought up to a solid foundation very quickly – by the second day they were building simple but working operational dashboards against our own systems which really helped to contextualize the material. Within one week of Mark’s engagement, the team took and passed the MS70-400 certification, but perhaps more importantly they are energised about the value that can be delivered using System Center.
